Jessica P. Floyd, MD

Dr. Jessica Floyd, MDDr. Floyd is a neurologist practicing in the Lexington/West Columbia, SC, area. She will speak about brain health benefits, including humor and laughter.  Learn how to add joy and zest to life and improve your health at the same time!

Dr. Floyd specializes in evaluating and treating patients with disorders that affect the nervous system. She also sees patients with general neurologic concerns and those concerned about lowering their personal or family risk of stroke, or the possibility of cognitive decline that can occur with age and the accumulation of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, pre-diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Dr. Floyd received her bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. before completing her medical education at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia. She completed her internship and neurology residency at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., where she participated in four years of rigorous neurology training with research rotations in neuroimmunology at Mayo Clinic during her internship.

Scott Stantis

Stantis is currently the editorial cartoonist for The Chicago Tribune and creator of the internationally syndicated politically-themed comic strip Prickly City. He began his career with the Chicago Tribune on Sept. 1, 2009, following the paper’s nine-year search to replace Jeff MacNelly.  Stantis was previously a staff cartoonist for The Birmingham News, The Orange County Register, The Commercial Appeal, The Arizona Republic and the Grand Rapids Press.

His editorial cartoons are also syndicated to over 400 newspapers via Tribune Content Agency. He usually espouses a conservative or libertarianstance in his cartoons, calling himself a contrarian. He served as president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists 2003–2004.

Stantis has also created several comic-strips:

  • Sydney (1985–1986; through United Media);
  • The Buckets (1990–present; originally through Tribune Media Services, later through United Media);
  • Prickly City (2004–present; through Universal Press Syndicate).

In 2001 Stantis hosted a short-lived afternoon talk show on one of Birmingham’s local talk station WYDE 850 AM after having served as guest host for other shows on the station.

Personal life
Stantis was born in 1959 in San Diego, CA. He attended Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington, CA. Taught by the intellectual William Loiterman at Los Angeles Harbor College. He attended California State University, Long Beach. He is the staff editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune. He lives with his wife of over three decades, Janien Fadich-Stantis. They have two grown sons.
